Picture a software buyer typing a long, specific question into a search box. Which project management tool suits a five-person agency, and what do people say about switching? Not long ago, that query returned a list of links to compare. Today, many people read a generated summary first, and some skip the results page by asking a chatbot instead. That change is reshaping AI search and brand discovery.
The distinction matters for businesses. Ranking in traditional results and being discovered through AI-powered experiences overlap, but they are not the same thing. A brand can rank well and still go unmentioned in an AI answer, or be named without earning a click.
This article explains what is changing and what Google documents about its AI features. It covers what independent research shows, how teams can adapt without abandoning SEO fundamentals, and where Reddit and other online communities fit.
Search Is Expanding Beyond Traditional Rankings
Search is no longer a single experience. The classic results page still exists, but it now sits alongside Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google describes AI Overviews as a way to get the gist of a complex topic quickly, with links for exploring further. AI Mode suits queries that need more reasoning or comparison.
These features are not identical. Google notes that they may use different models and techniques, so the links they show will vary. It also says AI Overviews appear only when its systems judge them additive, so they often don’t trigger at all. Standalone AI assistants add yet another path, and availability and behavior differ by platform, country and query.
That variety makes any single ranking metric an incomplete picture. A page’s position for one keyword says little about whether a brand appears in a synthesized answer. Our earlier piece on SEO’s expanding role beyond rankings makes a similar point: visibility now spans more places than the results page.
How AI Search Is Changing Brand Discovery
From browsing links to receiving synthesized answers
In traditional search, the user compares sources. With an AI summary, the first impression is assembled for them. Pew Research Center analyzed the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025. Users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared, according to Pew’s analysis.
That is one month of Google-only, US data. It shows a pattern, not a universal rule.
Adoption is also growing. In a February 2026 Pew survey of 5,119 US adults, 60% said they read AI summaries at the top of search results. About half said they use AI chatbots, and 42% use them to search for information. Pew changed its question wording between 2024 and 2026, so year-over-year comparisons need care. Skepticism also remains high, with 63% saying AI is advancing too quickly.
The role of sources, citations, and follow-up questions
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use “query fan-out,” issuing several related searches across subtopics before composing a response. Its guide to generative AI features gives the example of a lawn-weeds question that spawns searches about herbicides, chemical-free removal and prevention.
For brands, this means content can be retrieved for a related sub-question, not only for the exact phrase a user typed. Google also says it displays a wider, more diverse set of links than a classic search.
Pew’s March 2025 data adds context on sources. Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were the most frequently linked sites in both AI summaries and standard results. Treat that as a one-month snapshot, not a fixed ranking of sources.
How discovery can influence the customer journey
Consider a hypothetical example. A buyer asks an assistant for alternatives to a tool, sees three brand names, and follows up with a question about pricing for small teams. A week later, they search one of those brands directly.
The brand’s first touchpoint happened inside an answer. The only trace is a later branded search or direct visit. This is a reasonable hypothesis about how journeys unfold, not a measured result, and attribution remains difficult.
What This Means for Brand Visibility and Organic Traffic
The evidence is mixed, and it depends on what you measure.
Visibility and clicks can diverge. Pew found fewer clicks on pages with summaries in its dataset. Google says clicks from pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, meaning visitors spend more time on the site. Both can be true, but Google’s observation comes from Google itself, so treat it as one input.
Awareness and consideration may rise even when visits don’t. Being named in an answer can shape which brands a buyer considers. That influence is hard to see in a click report.
Measurement is improving, but it has limits. Google documents that AI feature appearances are included in overall Search Console data. It also offers a Generative AI performance report for AI Overviews and AI Mode, rolled out worldwide as of August 31, 2026. The report is documented around impressions, meaning how often links were shown. Other AI platforms do not necessarily expose comparable data.
Results vary. In Pew’s dataset, only 8% of one- or two-word searches produced an AI summary, versus 53% of searches with ten or more words. Industry, platform and intent also change what users see. No credible source supports a claim that traffic rises or falls everywhere.
Why Traditional SEO Still Matters
Google states that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Beyond that, the usual fundamentals apply:
- Crawlability and indexability: Allow crawling in robots.txt and through any CDN or hosting layer.
- Helpful, original content: Google’s guide says unique, non-commodity content will likely matter more over time than any other tactic it lists.
- Clear structure: Use logical headings, accurate page titles and internal links that make content easy to find.
- Trust signals: Cite sources, show authorship where it fits, and keep structured data consistent with visible text.
- Measurement: Use Search Console and analytics to see what is actually happening.
Even so, eligibility is not selection. Google notes that meeting every requirement doesn’t guarantee a page will be crawled, indexed or served. Being eligible for an AI answer does not mean being cited in one.
Google’s guide also says to ignore several popular tactics for Google Search. These include llms.txt files, breaking content into tiny “chunks,” and seeking inauthentic mentions. From Google’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO.
How Businesses Can Improve Their Visibility Across Search Experiences
None of these steps guarantees an AI citation. They make a site more useful and easier to find, which is what each search experience rewards.
- Understand your audience’s questions. Collect them from sales calls, support tickets, search data and community discussions.
- Answer those questions directly. Create original content that addresses the question rather than restating what already exists.
- Show real expertise. Use specific explanations, first-hand examples and verifiable evidence.
- Strengthen technical SEO. Confirm that important pages are crawlable, indexable and fast on mobile.
- Link related content. Connect related articles so both readers and crawlers can follow the topic.
- Build a credible presence elsewhere. Contribute where your audience already talks, such as relevant communities, industry sites and video.
- Monitor what you can measure. Track organic performance, the Generative AI performance report, and any AI referral traffic your analytics shows.
- Review and improve. Update content based on evidence, not on assumptions about what AI systems prefer.
| Area | What to examine | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional SEO | Indexing, rankings, organic clicks | Maintain technical and content fundamentals |
| AI search experiences | Cited sources, Search Console AI impressions, available referral signals | Monitor what can actually be measured |
| Content quality | Audience questions, original insights, evidence | Create useful, differentiated content |
| Online communities | Recurring questions, relevant discussions, community rules | Participate authentically and learn from audience needs |
The Role of Reddit and Online Communities in Brand Discovery
Communities are where people ask questions in their own words. That makes them a research source first. Our guide on how SaaS brands can use Reddit and YouTube for search discovery describes recurring threads as a way to see what buyers compare and where they hesitate. Those insights can then shape website content that answers the same questions clearly.
Participation is different from research, and credibility has to be earned. Useful contributions, transparency about who you are, and respect for each community’s rules matter more than frequency. Our post on authentic Reddit marketing practices stresses listening first and not posing as an ordinary user. Our overview of Reddit marketing and brand awareness adds that moderators often remove promotional content and that manipulating votes damages credibility.
There is also a line between earning credibility and manufacturing it. Google says inauthentic mentions across the web aren’t as helpful as they might seem, because its systems also work to block spam. Reddit activity does not guarantee inclusion in any AI answer. The same applies to backlinks. A thread may be cited, or it may not.
Many brands also stumble on expectations. Our breakdown of common Reddit marketing mistakes covers over-promotion, ignoring community culture and expecting immediate results. Avoiding those mistakes protects your reputation, whatever AI systems do with the conversation.
A Practical Action Plan for Marketing Teams
Use this as a suggested framework, not a proven timeline or a guarantee of results.
First 30 days: audit and baseline
- Check crawlability, indexing and key page templates.
- Review existing content against real audience questions.
- Record baseline organic performance, including the Generative AI performance report if it is available for your site.
Days 31 to 60: improve and create
- Update your most important pages with clearer answers and stronger evidence.
- Publish original content built on your own expertise.
- Add relevant internal links between related pages.
Days 61 to 90: evaluate and refine
- Compare performance against your baseline.
- Identify content gaps that recurring audience questions reveal.
- Adjust the plan based on what the data supports.
Conclusion: Build Visibility Beyond a Single Ranking
Brand discovery now happens in more places than the results page, and AI-generated answers are one of them. The evidence supports paying attention, but it does not support abandoning what already works. Google’s own guidance points back to indexable pages, original content and a credible presence.
The practical approach is to measure what you can, keep improving your fundamentals, and learn from the conversations your audience is already having. A ranking is one signal among several, so judge visibility by the whole picture.
